Say It Loud...

Post by Dave Cahill »

Caught a bit of the Irish U-21s playing Switzerland, and I noticed Cian Hughton, son of Chris, playing full back for Ireland. Chris was Irelands first ever black senior international, and it got me thinking about the number of black players to have represented Ireland since his debut. Can't think of a goalie, but I put the following team together

Flemming, O'Cearubhail, Babb, Hughton, Best, Reid, McGrath, Phelan, Morrison and Folan.

Any other suggestions...and a goalie?

Darren Randolph is your GK. With the only problem being lack of caps. He has 10 U-21a though so given time...

There was Liam George, career cut short by injury I think and never capped at senior level. What about Chris's brother Henry(played for Palace),he got capped a couple of times afaik?

I remember Chris making his debut for Ireland, a friendly at Dalyer against the USA in Autumn '79.I was there(although it was a schoolday if I remember correctly) It was a great ol buzz, a couple of red cards and a great fightback after we went behind to win 3-2.

Amazing to think that England's first black player(Viv Anderson) only made his debut about a year before that.
We all dream of a team of Sean O'Briens......

Christ , matches at Dalymount. I was at the last game there in 89 against Morocco.

Was Don Goodman black or mixed race? He got a few caps for ROI.

You're mixing him up with Jon Goodman of Wimbledon who got a few caps alright.
