Prefer David Harmon and Sean Kelly on Eurosport, (although Carlton Kirby is a pain). Eurosport's cycling coverage is first rate, especially for the Grand Tours and the Spring Classic's. Mind you if I here Kelly say "make the calculation" again I will personally puncture his tyres!mikey wrote:That was Hugh Porter - hard going for the guy and you have to feel for him as he was commentating forvthe entire race - and was making the kinds of gaffs the entire way through!! Then the peleton arrives and this moron says, about 10 times:- "Here's the battle for fourth place. Fighting hard for fourth place here..."

Re: The Olympics Thread
Look through the boxing and rant threads and you'll see I've been moaning about Jimmy for years.
The scoring is simple. 5 judges are positioned at points around the ring. When the judges see what they think is a clean hit they press a red or a blue button. If three judges press the same coloured button within a second the boxer of that colour gets one point. A clean hit is a hit to the head or torso with the front of the glove. The hit will not count of it, even partly, hits the other boxer's arms or gloves.
Remember you're only seeing one angle so what you see as a point scoring shot other judges may not see and vice versa.

Re: The Olympics Thread
I missed the O'Neill fight but he was exactly the same for the Adam Nolan fight, except this time it was about Wexford hurling. How Nolan was a great man, who's be welcomed back into the team anytime, endless waffling shite. He almost seemed to miss the fact that Nolan was taking a fair battering in the final round. It's like he writes his commentary before the fight and sticks to it regardless, only occasionally acknowledging what's actually going on in the ring. Annoying as f**k, but it seems Jimmy will have to pass away before RTE stop wheeling him out every four years.tackle-bag wrote:Sorry, can somebody please explain to me how that senile moron Jimmy Magee ever came to be regarded as a "legendary" sports broadcaster. For years, RTÉ have been deploying him to commentate on sports about which he knows sweet FA. In my view, however, he's equally bad for the sports on which he is supposedly an expert.
Just listened to his commentary for Darren O'Neill's fight there. He added absolutely zero value to the experience. I'm not really a boxing fan, and I don't understand how the points system (which I suspect might be an arbitrary pile of sh!te) works. As such, the one thing I'm looking for from a commentator (which, to be fair to the old hack, Jim Neilly on the BBC provides) is an idea of when a point is scored. I suspect that the majority of fair-weather fans who have tuned in for the Olympics are in the same boat. Instead of providing this insight, Magee spent the entirety of the 3 rounds waffling on about how O'Neill was from Kilkenny and therefore could have been a great hurler in his youth.

He probably does it for free.

Re: The Olympics Thread
Can someone please explain to me why the British track cycling team haven't been disqualified when they have openly admitted to cheating in the heats?

The French didn't consider it cheating. Read the article.tackle-bag wrote:Can someone please explain to me why the British track cycling team haven't been disqualified when they have openly admitted to cheating in the heats?

Cavendish was not able to race in the velodrome due to him only competing on the roads, whereas a French and German sprinter needed to compete in a second event before being allowed into the Olympic Keirin event. So, where did they put them, in the Olympic Road Race! Fair? No. What goes around, comes around.

Some casual racism from Magee this evening.
Magee said if there was a blackout in London you'd be able to see the bright boots of the (black) boxer-but you wouldn't see the rest of him.

Ah now hang on. I'm no fan of Jimmy but didn't he say you'd see nothing except his boots, which looked glow in the dark type efforts.Amz wrote:Some casual racism from Magee this evening.

It was a bit dodgy, a guy of his experience should know better.
I want to hear about the boxing, not the clothes, or the backgrounds, or the occupations of the boxers unless they're "facts" absolutely relevant to what's happening in the ring at the time.

Ah come on now. This is the only time Jimmy gets out of the house every four years so he's going to talk about what he feels like, never mind the actual boxing.Amz wrote:It was a bit dodgy, a guy of his experience should know better.

Re: The Olympics Thread
Jimmy got everything in about Nolan there in 30 seconds. Wexford? Check! Gards? Check! Hurling? Oh you better believe a check there!!
Re: The Olympics Thread
Maybe we should play Jimmy Magee bingo, make it less painful.

Re: The Olympics Thread
I'm sure there will be differing views on this, but I have to say I think Ciarán Ó Lionaird deserves credit for the honesty of the interview he gave this evening. Too many Irish athletes trot out that inane bull about just being happy to be at the Olympics. If you're not looking to win medals then you're in the wrong game, because you obviously don't have the desire that drives 99.9% of top athletes to reach their potential (I accept there are probably 0.01% who reach the top of their sport without ever trying that hard). Going to the Olympics to get knocked out in the heats is a waste of time, and it's great to see someone who's in that position accept that fact.

Re: The Olympics Thread
I've seen up close the work and sacrifice made by people who never made it there. I think you don't understand what their motivation is. If you're an Irish athlete, you're almost certainly amateur and you're not doing it for the entertainment of the man on the street.tackle-bag wrote:I'm sure there will be differing views on this, but I have to say I think Ciarán Ó Lionaird deserves credit for the honesty of the interview he gave this evening. Aileen Morrisson had a disappointing swim, came out of water in 35th. A fall on a slippery corner in lap one has pretty much ended her chances, she's about 2mins down on lead group. GB's domestique doing her job well so far.
Re: The Olympics Thread
Super finish to the women's tri.
Sprint finish, dead heat, photo to decide the winner.
Nicola Spirig of Switzerland pipped it in the photo.

Who is this complete gobsh!te that's doing the live blogging on the Irish Times website? He incorrectly fancies himself as a bit of a comedian and spends a substantial portion of his time peddling his half-baked political views. Needless to say, like almost all live bloggers I've come across, he tells you sweet FA about what's actually going on at the Olympics.

Not sure I'm happy with seeing domestiques in tri. Cycling is well known as a team sport but tri is all about the individual to me.Amz wrote:Aileen Morrisson had a disappointing swim, came out of water in 35th.
