Hickie scoops IRUPA hall of fame award

Former Ireland wing Denis Hickie will become the latest recipient of the IRUPA (Irish Rugby Union Players Association) Hall of Fame Award at the players' awards night in the Burlington Hotel on Wednesday.

Former Leinster star Hickie, who scored 29 tries in 63 caps for his country, said: "I'm honoured to accept this award and delighted to be inducted into the BNY Mellon IRUPA Hall of Fame in the company of some of Ireland's greatest rugby players."

"Rugby gave me a fantastic playing career and this accolade really means a great deal, especially coming from fellow professionals."
Good on ya Denis.

On a personal note Hickie was my Leinster and Ireland rugby hero from a young age, I met him at an event that happened to be on the 10th anniversary to the very day of the first Celtic league final and Leinsters victory over Munster. I had a jersey from that game and on the night I got Reggie, Girvan, big Mal to sign it, I had great crack with all of them and had a team sheet from that day which Reggie in particular was very interested in, you could see his mind going back to the fond memories of the day, a comment about Miller getting a red card. Then I asked Denis Hickie to sign my jersey, which he did but the grown man in front of him was totally star struck, I couldn’t think of a thing to say, not a word. It was so bad that poor old Denis had to make all the small talk to fill the silence. I've met many players, but I've only been star struck once.

Congratulations Denis. All the best.

No. But he was very young retiring. 31.

Was at the end of season game in Cardiff that turned out later to be his last day in a Leinster Jersey.

Would have loved himself and Gleeson (also 31 retiring iirc) to have stuck around for a HC :(

Possibly my favourite player ever. Legend of the game and the one true speedster I can remember Ireland having.

slight tangent but IMO Gleeson 2nd best player after BOD I ever saw play regularly. When dagger dropped him (unfairly) he decided if I cant play at the top wont play at all. do remember Cheika saying yeah am not worried as we've Jennings and a young lad from Carlow called Sean O'Brien who's only 20 but he's hard as nails

Hickie said he knew it was right time to retire as everyone said he shouldnt/he had more to give so he knew he went out on the top of his game. In radio interiew he said he didnt even see a rugby game for over a year after he retired, was busy trekking around South America and so on

I'm still waiting to hear what the big Hickie secret was all about!

Legend of a player, and worthy award recipient; undisputed.
