D4TRESS sign offensive ?

Post by Second Row »

On Saturdays off the ball on Newstalk Ger Gilroy made the following statement about the previously held misconception about Leinster Rugby being a team for South Dubliners only.

“They’ve got that D4tress nonsense which is kind of insulting to anybody from outside the area”

Do people find the D4tress sign offensive from outside D4 or outside Dublin ?

I think they missed the point a bit. The reference is only about the location of the home ground which is in D4.

The off season sees journalists trying to manufacture stories out of thin air.

Never met anyone who is/was offended by it and not offended myself.

Think it's one of the best banners we have!

Oh sweet baby jebus and the suffering orphans

The ground is in Dublin 4, it is (we hope) our fortress.

if you can come up with a better pun/play on words using that information, go for it, the OLSC would love to have new ideas for banners I'm sure

Agree this is manufactured nonesense.
A fortress in sporting term is a reference to the stadium.
The RDS (and the sometimes used Aviva) are both in D4.
The combination of D4 and Fortress offer a nice pun.

To me as a Cork man it is quite clearly just making a pun based on the home location of the stadium. Nothing to do with excluding the other 11 counties (12 if you include County Dublin outside the city) and 23 odd other regions within Dublin city.

I don't know who Gilroy is but he must be a bit thick to come out with a line of guff like that. As a proud northsider and previous inhabitant of D13 I get what the banner is about, and D13tress just doesn't work - it looks like distress which is not the message we want to be putting out.

I'm not from D4 and it's not offensive. Fairly clever play on words I think.

Maybe we could have a chant of

she is D, delirious
she is I, incredible
she is S, superficial
she is C, complicated
she is Ooooo

D --- Cool---mine--- C --- O

Maybe Gilroy would approve of the inclusivity of your chant, but not me - there's such a thing as going too far.

I'm not from D4, I'm not even from

I am not offended by D4tress or Molly Malone.

Fortress Thomond is offensive too becasue it clearly excludes the Cork lot. And those "this is our field" signs should be taken down because their exclusive.

It really is silly season....
I like your right leg. A lovely leg for the role.
I've got nothing against your right leg.
The trouble is ... neither have you

Totally agree.

I thought it was a bizarre statement.

I certainly haven't met anybody that is offended by it.

About as gormless as Pat Kenny reading out about Gavin Henson going into Church after every game thinking it was a reference to prayer. Taxi for Gilroy.

Daft man.

I was born in Wexford but grew up in Wicklow, I dont find it offensive, to say that its offensive is a joke. What isn't a joke however is this constant stereo type that gets pushed on Leinster by people, I find that offensive. I find if funny that people insist that we are all rich snobs, they belive this with all their hearts although they have never been to a Leinster match. I think they need to belive it. It has to be said that its worn out and although you get it every now and then its not as bad as say 10 years ago, its only the very very stupid that still peddle this sort of guff.

A couple of things, Dublin north, south, east and west is a part of Leinster, D4 is also a part of Dublin and therefore Leinster. The stadium is in D4, fortress reffers to the stadium.

People who sing about the fields of Athenry are geographically limiting themselves to a pretty tight area as well.

I was surprised by his comments... its not offensive in the slightest (perhaps Gilroys comments were?). There seems to be a consensus on this thread.

I'm offended that he dismissed it as nonsense.

Leinster only lose about 1 home game a season. That seems pretty fortress like to me.
