How confident are you that Matt O'Connor will be successful?

Post by goreyguy »

Almost a full season completed, how confident are you that Matt O'Connor will be a successful Leinster coach?

Success being defined as winning the Heineken/Euro Cup.

Is that a realistic definition of success given the squad we'll have available over the next few seasons?

We have plenty of quality players but we're a bit light in a few key areas.

Ok. I just think putting the onus of winning the Heineken Cup primarily on the coach is a bit simplistic is all. There are various factors that come into it.

So the question is will Leinster very win the HC, somewhat win the HC or not at all win the HC?

Stupid thread.

Forget about tangible success(HC wins) which the opposition have to be factored in, I dont even think he will be "morally/metaphorically" whatever you want to call it, successful, I cant see him getting us playing rugby, his picking of Gopperth and shite kicking/chasing game proves that.

It think its more, 1. HC win, irrespective of performance, its success. 2. perform , reach latter stages. 3. Dont perform and dont win.

How confident are you that Matt O'Connor will be the coach to lead Leinster to win a Heinken/Equivalent Cup.

Very confident, somewhat confident and not at all confident.. not a difficult concept to understand.

Well in Europe at least, under O'Connor, we've improved on last seasons performance already.

Sure I'm over 30. I have difficulty going to the toilet on my own.

I also have difficulty seeing into the future as there are too many variables many of which are outside the control of MOC.

Leinster may have difficulty winning the HC with ANY coach the way things are going in France (just to pick one example of many)

Which is why it is a stupid thread (In my opinion)

No, I wouldn't say it. They were, theres no discussion to be had. Last year we failed to make the knockouts in the Heineken Cup, this year we didn't. Its not even open for debate.

There are no guarantees in life is a bit of a cliche but MOC is the coach who has to take us through what is going to be a tough transition.
He doesn't have a squad good enough to win the HEC unless we get a home draw (applies to French teams only) in the HEC QF.
We blew our chance of a HEC this year when we lost to Northampton in the Aviva.
That means the "very" option is gone.
However winning the PRO12 is not as easy as people seem to think. So if we win the PRO12 this season then MOC will have done well in his first season.

It's really what he does next that matters.
How does he replace BOD?
Can he beef up our second row and perhaps even our BR.
How does he deal with the OH situation.
How does he handle SH succession.

Good luck Matt.

Out of interest, if we were currently floating between 4th and 5th in the Pre12, but had made the semifinal, would you be asking this question?

Last year Munster made the Semifinals of the Heineken Cup. you could argue that if they had a Home Semi they could have beaten Clermont, and then a home final?

But in the league they had 11 wins from 22 games

This year we are top of the table and have 7 try bonus points. During the 2011-12 season we only got 5 for the seaon.

We are still favourites to win our domestic trophy. Should that not be the minimum benchmark for the season

I'm sure there are plenty of other reasons to call this a stupid thread, but I'll +1 this one to save time.
