Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
Small enough intake this season. I suppose we might get one or two being added during the season again.
Look out Itchy, he's Irish

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
Leinster Academy Preview
Prop
Jack Aungier(Suttonians RFC/Clontarf) - Year 3/20, while still very young for a TH Prop did not kick in the season past with his scrummaging a concern. Is under pressure now with the emergence of Clarkson.
Michael Milne(CC Roscrea/UCD) - Year 2/20, had a solid but unspectacular 20's campaign being the primary backup LH prop.. has a chance of game time this season as 4th choice LH Prop, if he able to perform to level required.
Tom Clarkson(Blackrock/DUFC) - Year 1/19, A star performer for the Irish u20's and a rock in the scrum, is eligible for the 20's again next season and will likely be focusing on them for the majority of next season.
Hooker
Dan Sheehan(Clongowes/DUFC) - Year 2/21, Sheehan who earned an academy place last season during preseason and the celtic cup, is a huge hooker physically at 6'3, 110kg. Will hope to continue his upward progression this season.
Lock
Jack Dunne(St. Michaels/DUFC) - Year 2/20, Dunne who impressed in his 5 appearances late last season returns this season, still not 21 this huge lock could be set for a lot of gametime this season.
Ryan Baird(St. Michaels/DUFC) - Year 2/20, A star performer for Ireland u20 during the World Cup, Baird returns now with some impressive showings at blindside to his name. Could progress quickly this season.
Charlie Ryan(Blackrock/UCD) - Year 1/20, Ireland u20 captain for the World Cup, he earned his academy place with a series of highly impressive performances for the irish 20's at TH lock, which displayed huge improvement from his previous season, how much more can he improve?
Backrow
Oisin Dowling(St. Michaels/Lansdowne) - Year 3/22, Dowling is under pressure from younger, bigger and more athletic players at his position in the academy.. a transition to blindisde full time may be on the cards but still may not be enough for him to earn a senior contract.
Brian Deeny(Wexford RFC/CLontarf) - Year 1/19, A surprise inclusion in this seasons academy class, his future position seems to be up in the air with experience playing backrow and lock for the irish 20's. Eligible again this season for them so will likely be focused on them for the majority of the season.
Martin Moloney(Athy RFC/Old Belvedere) - Year 1/18-19, Injury ended his season early, there is some confusion around his age and eligibilty for the 20's next season, if eligible he looks to be the favourite to start at openside.
Scrumhalf
Patrick Patterson(Blackrock/UCD) - Year 2/20, A surprise academy entrant last season after a quiet U20 campaign, this diminutive scrumhalf scored his first try for leinster off the bench last season, will hope to pressure his fellow age grade 9 Hughie O'Sullivan for the 3rd scrumhalf position.
Outhalf
Harry Byrne(St. Michaels/Lansdowne) - Year 2/20, After a highly promising start to his 2nd season at u20 level, Byrne's season was cut short with injury. Will hope to push Frawley for the 3rd outhalf position this season.
David Hawkshaw(Belvedere/Clontarf) - Year 2/20, Injury ended this outhalf/centre, who was captaining the irish u20's from 12. Not expected back playing until after christmas.
Outside Backs
Gavin Mullin(Blackrock/UCD) - Year 3/21, Mullin, while talented has yet to display a standout attribute that will translate to senior pro rugby, not big enough for a modern centre and lacking the athleticism and skill for a modern day wing.
Tommy O'Brien(Blackrock/UCD) - Year 3/21, O'Brien is the standout prospect in this year, he missed almost all of last season with two injuries and will hope to remind everyone of his talent early this season either on the wing or either centre position.
Michael Silvester(Clongowes/DUFC) - Year 2/21, Focused on 7's rugby in 2019, unclear when he will return to leinster training.. will need a big season at 15's when he does return.
Aaron O'Sullivan(Exile/Blackrock) - Year 2/19, An injury interrupted season for the exile winger, who doesnt turn 20 until december, rumoured to be focusing on 7's this season.. presumably with leinsters blessing.
Liam Turner(Blackrock/DUFC) - Year 1/20, An ever present for the Irish u20's at 13, playing every minute of every game.. this diminutive centre enters the academy with an option to move back to the wing.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
I just don't get it. What possible benefit is there to telling Leinster they can't sign a particular player up to the academy?
There was a bit in O'Gara's piece in the Examiner that stood out to me:
"I look at the progress of Sevu Reece. He was going to Connacht at one stage, and now he's probably going to the World Cup as an All Black. That is what the environment of the Crusaders has done for him. I don't think you are comparing like with like if you had put him in a Connacht jersey this season – and that is said with no disrespect to Connacht."
"It's the people who create the environment, good or bad. It's very hard to explain to the reader, but you get confidence, belief and most importantly, security, from the people in the Crusaders environment – not from the environment itself."
If the other provinces' environments aren't as good for player development then the player won't turn out to be as good if they're moved there.
Leinster will get by just fine, but I feel sorry for the individual players affected.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
Doesn't appear either player is going elsewhere.. so nucifora blocked them for some other reason.
Hopefully leinster can find a way around this and keep the players involved.

That has to be the ultimate goal, though, surely? These players might not move, but what about players in coming seasons if they know they'll have to do what they're told to get a contract?mildlyinterested wrote:Doesn't appear either player is going elsewhere.. so nucifora blocked them for some other reason.

It can't be a money issue, can it? 16,000 is a small amount, relatively speaking.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
I'm struggling to see an issue with this. To me it reads as if the World Cup was an audition of sorts and they didn't impress. It doesn't make sense to me that they'd have been told they were getting contracts and then they'd be revoked by the IRFU given that Peter Smyth would likely have been the one to tell them they were getting them and then revoke them in his new role.
To me if would make sense that they were told they were looking good to get a contract, then there was a review of the World Cup and it was decided that they weren't good enough. Very harsh on them but as Hugo often says, that's professional sport.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
Certainly would be interesting of them to offer Foley an academy contract as a scrumhalf then remove that contract offer based on his performances at 12 at the world cup.

5 in when you promote 7 out of the academy means we have a smaller academy. But probably because we have a bigger squad.
1 back in total shows how high they are setting the bar due to talent already in the system.

There isn't any outstanding back coming out of school or playing club rugby at the moment who is upto the level required at the moment. If there was he'd get in, assuming he was allowed by nuciforaronk wrote: 1 back in total shows how high they are setting the bar due to talent already in the system.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
Another who must feel really hard done by is Adam MaGrue who was named in JWC Sq8uad of 32, four weeks before the departure but never got called up, despite being kitted and fitted before the main Squad departed. Two others called in and a scrumhalf played centre in the final game. What is that all about?
LaGrue Is small for a pro football No. 13, but he had a stellar AIL campaign with Terenure since Christmas, where his size was never an issue. He outplayed every centre he opposed in live competition, so it's difficult to see what more he can do.
Decision making of this sort does nothing for the credibility of the Academy or the reputation of Nucifora.

LaGrue is in the Leinster 20's squad fwiw...
so they are still looking at him, not sure what will happen to Foley now, hopefully leinster keep him around as they obviously wished to.

Brian Deeny would have been playing midfield for Wexford U20 last night against Dublin but instead is now joining the leinster academy.
Has a younger brother, Paul, who is a GAA/Rugby prospect too, played wexford minors this summer and involved with Leinster u18 clubs at the moment.

Re: Leinster Academy 19/20
From another forum on the two non-academy players.
I asked around on McKee and Foley last night.
McKees issue is that he actually didn't start an AIL match for Belvo after October and was subbing the whole time and they want more game time in him. Ed Rossiter starting ahead of him.
Ditto on Foley, needs more time on 9 skills.
I am not sure they were blocked - more not offered in the first place with a more of a we will suss it out a little bit first.
Foley - not seen to good enough at the moment at 9 or 12 - little bit of jack of all trades and want to see more at 9. Also seems to some decent options in the class coming through next season.
McKee - something similar. Will be invited to full pre season and just needs more game time and review in a few months.
