Is Patterson not year 3 this year?
He's gotten awfully fond of that brick

Any info on scrum-half Rob Gilsenan’s standing? I know he has had a number of injuries since Michael’s SCT last year. He has a great all-round game. Most of all his game management is top notch. Would love to see him at sub-Academy level soon.

Not involved with sub academy. Playing for ucd U20s last I saw.. I guess it's a question of how serious he is taking rugby going forward.. Is he invited to 20s trails etc.

Serious group of 9s at u19 level this season:
Ben Murphy(Pres Bray/Clontarf)
Rob Gilsenan(St. Michaels/UCD)
Will Reilly(Portlaoise RFC/Barnhall)
Matthew Cullen(Blackrock)

Thanks. I think he couldn’t have been involved at sub-academy with his injuries this year. On and off the pitch. Lots of talent pouring through in most positions alright.

Well he want involved with leinster over the summer due to injury AFAIK.. Since then who knows if he could have joined he certainly has the talent for it.. But the pro rugby isn't for everyone and the sub academy and the discipline it requires may be something that doesnt interest him.

We shall wait and see if he is back involved with leinster this summer

Seems increasingly like time and commitment to the Sub-Academy is becoming a key component of player development within the Leinster pathway. If players don't adapt to the disciplines required within the Centre of Excellencee, they may be judged as unsuitable for further development in Leinster. Fewer & fewer players will get Academy or other contracts unless they have been assessed and overseen within the Sub-Academy.

IMO, this is a really good strategy and will prove very beneficial. Emotional maturity and compatibility is an absolutely key attribute in a successful team and all must have the time and example to understand that ' there's no I in team'.

True, but do we that way not risk missing out on the next Gordon D'Arcy?

Given the relative weakness in this u20 age group I think those 4 michaels players will join year 1 straight from school.. Maybe post summer and preseason ala Hawkshaw or Larmour before him. Could be wrong of course but we shall wait and see.

I see the AFL is after another Gaa/Leinster u18 player in Fionn O'Hara.. Started at 10 for Leinster u18 clubs last summer and was involved with Ireland over Christmas. Was on trial with hawthorn at the of Jan. Plays minor football for Westmeath too.

That would mean 10 of the current academy (as listed https://www.leinsterrugby.ie/teams/academy/) would be getting promoted or leaving the province.

Jack Aungier, Roman Salanoa, Michael Milne, Dan Sheehan, Ryan Baird, Oisin Dowling, Harry Byrne, Gavin Mullin, Tommy O'Brien and Jack Kelly*.

We've already got a slightly bloated senior squad this season (46 players) due to the demands of the RWC so unless we see a lot of departures from the senior squad this Summer the pathway for quite a few of the current academy looks crowded.

*Kelly is still listed on the website but thought he'd left already.

Probably yeah , very good players on year 1 and gonna be an exciting year group for Ireland u20s next year with the likes of Boyle, Soroka and Cosgrave etc. Looks like there’s gonna be a frightening amount of talent in the academy next year, looking forward to seeing Hawkshaw come back from injury and seeing Liam Turner getting some game time with the 15s aswell..he’s been playing 7s recently along with Aaron O’Sullivan. But Hawkshaw and Turner are the most exciting prospects along with the likes of Boyle, Soroka and Cosgrave of course. Andrew Smith is a terrific player aswell

Can see the likes of Oisin Dowling getting released and a few of those players will get promoted to the Senior Squad and some may move Province

I don't disagree with anything you say there. BUT there is a risk of developing a single type of player to the exclusion of all others. I've heard Lancester talk on a couple of times about how diligent, smart, humble all the academy graduates are. But there is also a need for different characters and characteristics in the team. One of the reasons he values Lowe so much.

Yeah it's an interesting one.. You have be a serious 19 year old to get through the sub academy system. How much talent is lost due to demands of sub academy?

It's hard to say as players need to show they have the discipline etc. to be a professional.

If the loss is 'talent - without adequate commitment' that's the reality of a professional contact sport. The objective for Leinster is ultimately the preparation of the strongest Squad system possible for the purpose of winning the trophies they compete for. There are often individuals who demonstrate some particular skill but if they cannot (or will not) marry that to the skills of the other players in camp, it becomes unusable.

'Commitment' is just one of the necessary attributes but not the only one. Physical capacity to train hard is another one, as is doggedness or refusal to accept defeat. Each of these attributes is important and become more pronounced within the environment of the Sub-Academy. That is why it is a key element in the development pathway.

I see Charlie Ward is clear that his pro future is as a LH Prop.. Will that be at Leinster? I'd say it's unclear.

Soroka, O'Brien and Hernan look like a quality backrow trio to replenish the academy next summer.
