It's like that with the Springboks quite a lot - huge forwards, but a good number of small, nippy backs - guys like aplon, kolbe, paulse, brent russell.

French too. But the English tend to go big everywhere if they can when they go big. Last year their big success was built on two very mobile flankers beside Vunipola though. We are the same as England. We wouldnt easily pick a Kolbe-sized winger, even at scrumhalf would be a concern.

McGrath, Larmour and Earls are hardly giants!

Nice Adam Byrne video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey9EdAO_ZuA

He really is hard to stop when he gets going and should be a brilliant weapon for us.

Hopefully he regains some form and can finally cement himself in the side.

Irish rugby doesn't get many 6'3 15 stone plus wingers with his physical gifts.

If nothing else, himself and Kelleher will get plenty of tries at Pro14 level if they're played together.

That's superb news for us. I assume this is a Leinster rather than IRFU contract?

Lowe is not just a fabulous player. His enthusiasm and good humour are infectious and good for the whole squad. Even Johnny's "mood" seems better when Lowe is playing.

Getting JLo nailed down for three years is massive.

Clearly very highly rated and as has been said above he adds an X factor and energy to the team that's priceless.

We're really going to miss him in Pro14 games when he becomes IQ.

It's not that Ireland don't produce players his size and weight or with his skill and elusiveness, or with his explosiveness in contact; we don't seem to do it in 1 person. Guys like Stockdale or Adam Byrne are similar speed and size but they don't spend much time punching holes. Farrell is big and offloads. Zebo was big and fast. Trimble was big and knew how to tackle hard.

Lowe just does it all so well. And he inspires players around him. When he joined he was really good at putting the ball on the deck, getting up and picking it up again. Other players started doing it too. He also bit in too often but thankfully no one copied him.

It will be interesting how or if Ireland use him, partly because form is a big unknown.

Sad that they fired away four backs to do so and left McFadden and Kearney without a decent farewell after all their years of loyalty to Leinster. Surely a 2 yr deal would have sufficed - he wasn't going anywhere - he had spent 3 yrs years looking to become IQ....

looks like lowe is flying back from NZ and will be ready to return to preseason when the squad meets up again on the 27th.
