Barry Daly
Gutted for him. Was a strange call to see him on the list of released players but made sense as he's not been fit for so long. Shame as he's prob the best finisher at the club alongside lowe. Good luck to him in the u.s.
Re: Barry Daly
Loved watching him play. Good luck, Barry.

Re: Barry Daly
He was a rare thing a tall, very fast, try scoring, homegrown winger. Shame he couldn't stay healthy.

Re: Barry Daly
19 tries in 36 appearances is some record. Think he might have been able to get himself a contract somewhere and would have loved to see him at Connacht but he's got a scholarship to study at Boston College so a great opportunity for him. Sorry to see him go, he was a cracking player.

Re: Barry Daly
His try rate was phenomenal.
Lowe: 3345 mins, 28 tries, try every 119min28sec
Daly: 1973 mins, 19 tries, try every 103min51sec
Pity about the injuries.

Maybe I missed that bit but was he not getting a new contract if he wasn't going to Boston?Flash Gordon wrote: ↑July 7th, 2020, 3:37 pm 19 tries in 36 appearances is some record. Deservedly a can favourite
Re: Barry Daly
Best of luck to the lad. With a bit more good fortune he could have been a real star for us. That try v Montpelier will be his signature Leinster moment.

Re: Barry Daly
It’s a tough sport and careers are short.
Sad to see him go but think it’s the right decision to set himself up for his post rugby career.
Daly has bags of talent. He was one the Leinster academy missed and he was really kicking in before the injuries. Still had time on his side but also has back luck on his side.

Re: Barry Daly
Come across as a really grounded sensible lad in that interview on leinsterrugby.ie.
Sorry to see him go as he looked like he could be a big contributor.
Best of luck to him... could be doing worse things than a few years in Boston.

Leading try scorer in Leinster's double-winning 2017/2018 season. That's some achievement!!!Serb wrote: ↑January 16th, 2021, 4:36 pm Good interview with Barry Daly on The 42.

Re: Barry Daly
Very good interview.
Hard to feel sorry for him, he got to do what every young player who picks up a ball dreams of doing, he played professional rugby for his local province.
Great to see that he hasn’t lost sight of how big that is.
Far too often it appears that players forget how fortunate they are do get that chance.
Instead concentrating on the fact that they had to retire early and not the fact that they got to live most rugby fans dream.
The article highlights that Irish rugby should look to cast the net a bit further when selecting young talent.
But for a fortunate opportunity, Daly may never have gotten the chance to play pro ball.
How many Barry Daly’s fall through the cracks each year?
In Ireland if you haven’t shown real promise before your 17th birthday then you may never get a chance.

Re: Barry Daly
Yep, in fact the career of Irish rugby's greatest ever player is just one example that disproves that particular theory Munster #1.
Re: Barry Daly
Please explain, as it seems like for the most part if a player hasn’t shown real promise at schools senior cup level then they are unlikely to make it into an academy or sub academy after school??mildlyinterested wrote: ↑January 17th, 2021, 12:11 pmSimply untruemunster#1 wrote: ↑January 17th, 2021, 11:51 am Very good interview.

How do you see a path existing for a player who isn’t a star at senior cup level?
Edit: I am not saying that no player ever makes it despite not being identified at schools level, just wondering what clear pathways exist to capture talent who develop later.

Re: Barry Daly
Considering Munster #1 said "may never get the chance" - 1 example does not disprove his theory! But I reckon he was referring more to the current set up rather than how it was ~25 years ago.

Well if you're indulging in semantics, I said 'just one example'.Laighin Break wrote: ↑January 18th, 2021, 9:41 amConsidering Munster #1 said "may never get the chance" - 1 example does not disprove his theory! But it's also not true in the current setup.
Plenty of guys who either didn't come through schools rugby or developed later.
Also Barry Daly isn't a great example of this is he? I don't follow schools rugby, but wasn't he marked to as a star for Gonzaga and playing for Leinster?

Yep and John Hayes a cap centurion only started playing rugby when he was 18.

Re: Barry Daly
There will always be example of players who fail to nail down a professional or academy contract in their teens or even early 20s but then go on to get one later on.
At Munster Cronin is a good example of a player who played a few seasons at AIL level and then got back into the system, but his story is not very common.
Things are very different now from how they were in the 90s or early 00s, back then then norm was for players to come through from the AIL.
Right now it definitely seems that players are set loose if they don’t show in their late teens. Which doesn’t allow for late developers.
