What a pathetically overhyped email. They have announced that O2 are extending their sponsorship. I understand the importance of the sponsorship money to the IRFU but a "major announcement regarding the future of Irish Rugby " it is not.
They should keep the hype for when they are going to announce a new deal to treat Connaught fairly. Or the financing of the redevelopment of the RDS into a 25,000 seater stadium etc.
Agree completely. They should really F the F off. Helping the Westerners, starting a 7s team and hosting a leg in Dublin, or stadium redevelopment, or a proper deal with the GAA, or a World Cup bid... all would have been major announcements.
Extending the deal with the sponsor? Well... that's nice. Not really time to stop the presses, was it? Z z z z z

Emmm... a €12m 6 yr deal with O2 in 2006 and its 5 season extension this morning, plus the €15m from Puma in '09 is kinda vital for Irish Rugby. How else can the IRFU continue to support 4 professional organisations which have won 4 of the last 6 H Cups plus ensuring that the National team competes against far wealthier and numerous countries such as France, South Africa & England etal.
The IRFU have managed to keep the vast majority of our players here in Ireland with the help of these and other sponsorships. And we can continue to look forward to seeing some of the best rugby players in the world togging out for each of the 4 Pro Teams, unlike the Used Car Salesmen clowns who for generations have exported all their talent off to England in the hope that someone else will pick up the bill training and developing their players.
So, it was very much a major announcement regarding the future of Irish Rugby.

Nicely put. I'm not sure what people were expecting, it was never going to be pulsating news. If I was working for the IRFU I'd be chuffed though and as a fan I am too. It's nice to know that they weren't put off by the ticketing shambles last Autumn too.

The IRFU could only ignore Isaac4leinster for so long before they finally buckled and realised that acknowledgement was needed...

Very satisfying to hear news like this, particularly when the IRFU has had a difficult year with servicing the debt on the new stadium along with the costs of tuning the professional and domestic games.

I had it forwarded to me.
With a name like Isaac, it's far more likely you're the moneylender they're in hock to.
