Re: RWC 2023: Ireland
I find it interesting that this has gone quiet just as we get into the Gathering thing, makes me wonder if someone is thinking of a ten year tie in to have Gathering II and RWC 2023......

Wow now that is fantastic news, incredible result 92% what a show of support for a potentially huge national event, possibly the biggest event the country can or will ever host. Fair play to the GAA. Win/win for everyone today.cormac wrote:GAA has approved the use of its stadia for a world cup bid. 92% yes vote.

This is wonderful news! If this goes ahead there should be some input from or promotion of the GAA during the tournament.TerenureJim wrote:Wow now that is fantastic news, incredible result 92% what a show of support for a potentially huge national event, possibly the biggest event the country can or will ever host. Exhibition matches before RWC games or tied tickets/discounts for GAA and group stage matches etc as well as plenty of promotion of how GAA skills were crucial in the formative stages of young Irish players.

Re: RWC 2023: Ireland
its win win for GAA they get a financial boon in rents, they look progressive and will probably get an ass load of grants to upgrade their facilities which will be showcased to non traditional GAA fans/bases

Re: RWC 2023: Ireland
It's a win for everyone, hotels/pubs would be full for the whole 6 weeks (or whatever the length) at a time of year which sent exactly high season, stadia across the country would get a huge boost even in Dublin alone you have Croker, Lansdowne, RDS and Tallaght that could easily host games and have plenty of facilities and transport links or space for them for fans. Be great to see the likes of Derry, Kilarney, Waterford, Sligo, Letterkenny, Cavan/Monaghan, Galway get stadia upgrades and have games. It could leave a great sporting infrastructure for GAA, Rugby, Soccer for years to come.simonokeeffe wrote:its win win for GAA they get a financial boon in rents, they look progressive and will probably get an ass load of grants to upgrade their facilities which will be showcased to non traditional GAA fans/bases

Bump for the day that's in it.
Re: RWC 2023: Ireland
Interesting to look at your original thoughts - pretty much spot on on the infrastructure, maybe a bit off on the locations. I agree with games being proposed for a non rugby location - Talllaght doesn't work for this at all. I wouldn't be convinced that you could use the RDS (unless you are only going to use Croker for maybe opening match, semi final and final, which is unlikely) - having three locations hosting group games in Dublin would lead to scheduling difficulties, possibly problems with accommodation etc. The perfect locations for the non traditional spotswould be Portlaoise, Kilkenny, Mayo and Killarney - it would have to cover as much of teh country as possible to see a real impact i.e more than just buy in because a team is staying there
Dublin (2), Cork, Limerick, Galway, Belfast, Portlaoise, Kilkenny covers most bases

Re: RWC 2023: Ireland
Golf Man. Would you cop on, of course they would use the RDS. 20K,location, a third of the countries population living in the general locality, everything about it is a no brainer. It would be perfect for a lot of the games. Which stadium in Cork are you proposing BTW? Muzzer or the big GAA ground which name escapes me. We would have to have a 2nd base area and TP and Cork gaa ground would provide that. One or two of NZ, Aus and SA could be based down there for the group stages. Muzzer could be used I suppose, for a game like Canada v Spain for eg.
You know I'm going to lose,

Nice to see this is still on the agenda.
More here: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/rugby-union/25846728The prospect of a bid by Ireland to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup has moved a step closer with the setting up of a cross-border working group. The working group will comprise key bodies associated with preparing a bid.
The Irish government and the Northern Ireland Executive hope the move will lay the groundwork for a potential all-island pitch to stage the tournament. Ministers from Belfast and Dublin met in Armagh on Wednesday to discuss hosting the sport's showpiece event.

An all-island pitch? Sounds exhausting and possibly outside the laws of the game.

Hey if NZ can be a stadium of 4m people I don't see why we can't have a pitch invasion of 6.5 million!Lar wrote:An all-island pitch? Sounds exhausting and possibly outside the laws of the game.

Good to see that as it is probably about the only thing both sets of ministers will ever agree on !Broken Wing wrote:Nice to see this is still on the agenda.

Question will be at next meeting "who is paying for this "
