Ireland And O2 Ireland Wolfhounds Squads Announced

Ireland squad
Who will be joining the Ireland squad on match day? The squad has been anounced!
The Ireland team management have today announced squads for both the senior Ireland team and the upcoming O2 Ireland Wolfhounds game as prepartations begin for the 2012 RBS 6 Nations.
There are 24 players named in the Ireland senior squad, with six additional up and coming players named who will join the first week of Ireland camp in Limerick to train with the squad.

The 22 man O2 Ireland Wolfhounds squad includes several uncapped players as well as full internationals. The Ireland squad, from which the team to play Wales will be selected, will be announced on Monday 30th January after the Wolfhounds game against the England Saxons.

Commenting on the announcement, Ireland Coach Declan Kidney said, "The Wolfhounds game gives myself and the other coaches one final chance to give games to players to see possible options before we settle on our match day 22 for the opening game.

"It also gives us the opportunity to have a closer look in training at some of the younger players, rather than bringing in more experienced players, who are very much still in the frame for selection.

"There have been some strong performances by players with the Provinces going really well. It always gives the squad a good boost when we have teams with players playing well in Europe before we step back up into the international scene."

Talking about the start of the RBS 6 Nations Championship, Kidney said, "It's a new tournament for us and for everybody involved, so irrespective of the highs and lows of the World Cup, it is a fresh and exciting challenge for us.

"The tournament begins what is big year for us, with a three test tour to New Zealand to come in June and ranking points all important for the Rugby World Cup in 2015, but the Six Nations always stands out as high point."

An expected and a disppointing selection. No Tuohy, no Toner, no POM, no EOM.

Exact same 22 as the WC with Jennings coming in for Leamy probably and a replacement for BOD. Sickened to see Fitz with the Wolfhounds.

Harder to get off this team than it is to get on it.

So Archer is our back up tight head, we really are screwed if anything happens to Ross.

Would have thought O Mahony would have made the actual squad rather than be just training with it until the wolf hounds have played.

You would wonder will 1 or 2 of the 6 guys filling in be bolters and make the squad

Whats with the 24+6 cr@p? Essentially there's 52 players there in the mix, really only about 25 of them are in with a realistic chance of the match day squad.
I find these squad announcements more and more meaningless...

Where's Gilroy? Why is Cullen selected when he's going for an operation next week? Good to see Luke's brilliant form rewarded with a place in the eh...Wolfhounds. DOC proves he's untouchable once again.

Usual dull as dishwater conservative selection. Expecting the usual mid-table finish in the Six Nations and counting the days til Kidney is gone. Perhaps the Lions will take him off our hands a year early. We can but dream.

Lads, we can tell feck all from this squad. Would there be any point in playing DOC in the wolfhounds? Think of it as a group of 50 odd and wait for the match squad for Wales before the gnashing of teeth starts.

Perhaps it's just me but should one of the squads not have Jamie Hagen's name in it?

In fairness, it would help if he was in a Leinster squad first... :?

Sums up the general philosophy (among several other depressing calls). A direct choice between a young player in great form who's never had a chance, and TOL (multiple chances, is never going to be good enough). Absolutely pointless selection.

Agree about Gilroy. Way better than Zebo.
