Argentina Ranking

Post by Ruckedtobits »

Somewhere out there, is somebody who has already figured out Argentina's latest IRB ranking (which I believe will be downward having drawn at home). Everyone of the Championship Games involving them has a real significance for Ireland's ranking at the end of next November when the World Cup seedings will be announced.

Given we are facing into the nearest thing that we can get to a home RWC in 2015, getting a 2nd Tier ranking in our Pool could be invaluable.

NEW ZEALAND 92.43
AUSTRALIA 86.05
SOUTH AFRICA 84.78
ENGLAND 83.09
FRANCE 83.03
WALES 82.26
IRELAND 79.85
ARGENTINA 79.34
SCOTLAND 77.97
SAMOA 76.23
ITALY 76.03

Argentina gained points for drawing at home with a team more than 3 points higher rated than them.

In fact, if they do move ahead of us, I think we'd earn more points if we beat them in the Autumn.

If we lose to Argentina and SA in the November tests, and Scotland win a test against on of the SH teams, they'll jump us.

I think we'll beat them anyway. This will be a brutally long season for them with 11 or so games. They'll be knackered come November. French teams will not be re-signing some of these guys I reckon.

Following their hammering by NZ (92.43) at the weekend Argentina will face into their final Rugby Championship match on an unchanged ranking of 8th with 79.34 points.

Unfortunately for us this means that should they beat Australia next weekend they'll jump ahead of us in the rankings prior to the autumn internationals - we may then have to rely on Wales and France to secure results against them which will help our position!!

Btw, for anyone interested, the result in Saturday's other match puts South Africa (85.61) up to second in the rankings ahead of Australia (85.21)

We just need top 8 right so isn't it more of a case of we don't want Scotland shooting up (nor us plummeting)?

Yep. Scotland are currently ninth on 77.97 and we're seventh on 79.85. They're playing New Zealand, South Africa and Tonga in November so we could do without them winning either of the first two matches. A win over Tonga won't have much impact on their rating.

they won't beat NZ so a win over SA wouldnt be enough on its own to propel them past us?

Yes, if we lost to both Argentina and SA, and Scotland beat SA, they would almost certainly overtake us. We have to match Scotland's two test match results. In the past, wouldn't have been an issue, but now......

If Argentina pass us out, then surely a win for us against them in November will surely put us above them again? Or is that too simplistic?

yeah but it doesn't mater if we are behind Argentina, as long as we ahead of Scotland.

By my calculation the real bonus for us would be a win against SA. They are now so far ahead of us in ranking that even a home win against them could move us to 6th and render Argentina game result almost irrelevant.

However, if the Blacks tank SA this weekend and Oz win in Argentina, the Boks would fall back to at least 3rd in rankings.

Yes, we have to match Scotlands results. If they lose both we're fine, no matter what happens in our games.
Terrible that we have to think like that, but there ya go!

Nothing we could do against SA would move us to sixth unless Argentina also beat Wales. As the rankings stand at the moment a win against SA by less than 15 points would move us to 81.13 points and a win by over 15 points would result in ranking points of 81.76.

Wales are currently on 82.26 so if they were to lose to Argentina by less than 15 points that would drop to 80.67 and if they lost by more than 15 they would finish on 79.87 points. The flip side of that would be that Argentina would come out of that match with either 80.93 or 81.73 points.

Wait a second, you can actually work out exactly what the ranking points will be? Does that mean you actually know how it all works?

I'm impressed.
