Provincial colours

This is probably the zillionth time someone has asked this, but does anyone know why Leinster switched from green to blue? Or, for that matter, why the other provinces wear the colours they do?

While I'm on the subject of colours, in the interests of balance I think the Blue September charity drive should be followed Red October to raise awareness of submarines. Awooga!

Munster wear red because of all the British troops that used to be based in that province and introduced the game of rugby there.
As a sign of gratitude to the Crown/British troops for introducing the game down there, the provincial team wore red .... used from making jerseys from actual army uniforms from that period.

Whilst I don't know about the uniform/jersey part, the popularising of rugby in Limerick is certainly due to the British forces who introduced the game there and played regularly with the locals. I don't know if Leinster ever wore green (aside from pre-season eco-friendly games). They've worn blue as far back as the 19th century. Similarly, I'm not sure if Munster have ever worn blue, the traditional colour of the province.

Dave Cahill maintains that the changes in provincial colours was down to whatever the kit manufacturer could supply at the best price. Leinster have played in a range of colours including green, blue, white and red

yeah, in the days before kit sponsorship became such an important part of the unions (and the branches) revenue, things were pretty arbitrary. The provinces had their primary colours, but after that, all bets were off, so if a change strip were needed, it was pretty much whatever O'Neills had 22 of. If you look in Kielys there is a signed Leinster jersey from that period, and it is patently an Ulster jersey with a Leinster crest sewn on.

How the provinces came by their primary colours is unknown to me, but I don't doubt it was an equally arbitrary process. Representative teams would again wear whatever they could get 20 odd of, or the dominant club in the area would provide jerseys as they had so many players on the team, or, as in the case of Armagh in GAA, who lost their original set of jerseys on a train, went to get new ones and the woman who made them only had orange wool left. By the 1880s, things had settled, and Leinster, Munster and Ulster were all wearing their now traditional colours pretty regularly (though not exclusively)
