Rugby Players preparing for their futures

Post by Scrum 5 »

Fair dues to Roberts who will graduate as a doctor after eight years study:

As with Contepomi before him I applaud him and other players who can excel at the sport and still have the determination to hit the books. The doctors only come to mind but fairly sure there's other examples out the (Shaggy with law?).

Think the sport in general needs to be applauded for encouraging players to think ahead to a time that they won't be playing professional sport.

Du Plessis, the Sharks tight head is a doctor too. I can't for the life of me remember his first name.

One of the Scottish props is a doctor too. He may possibly be retired at this stage now though.

Jannie du Plessis [Springbok tighthead, Bismarck's brother]. Geoff Cross is the Scottish doctor/prop. Still an active professional player, as far as I know.

If rugby ever becomes popular enough that a player can earn enough during their playing career to support them and their families for the rest of their lives then this will drop off. Up until the late 80s it was not unusual for soccer players to pursue a degree or a trade during their playing careers, once the real money came into the game this stopped by and large.

My thoughts exactly! :D

Its something players need to do because rugby salaries are decent but they aren't retirement salaries. Even a guy like Drico who is the greatest player to pull on an irish jersey ever will need to work after retirement.
Flash ahhhh ahhh, he'll save every one of us
