Virgin Media customers will have to find a new way to watch Pro 14 games, starting immediately......

Rugby fans set to lose out as eir Sport pulls its content from Virgin Media
Virgin Media subscribers will no longer have access to PRO14 rugby on eir Sport due to a dispute between the two broadcasters.

A multi-million euro contract dispute over sports rights between Virgin Media and Eir escalated today, with Eir Sport pulling its content from Virgin Media channels.

The move is in response to Virgin Media suddenly cutting its sports channel feeds on Eir Sport two weeks ago, claiming that Eir 'failed to pay the contracted distribution licence fee'.

The standoff means that customers of both services are set to be left without chunks of sports programming. Virgin Media have the rights to Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Nations League action, while eir Sport screen the PRO14 as well as League of Ireland and National League GAA games.

The timing will be particularly disappointing for Irish rugby fans who subscribe to Virgin Media, as they will no longer be able to watch PRO14 games shown by eir Sport, like this weekend's inter-provincial clashes at the Aviva Stadium.

"Eir Sport has today taken the difficult decision to remove its sport content from Virgin Media's platforms, two weeks after Virgin Media suddenly and unilaterally withdrew the Virgin Media Sports feed from Eir and its customers," said an Eir spokesperson.

"While Eir was entitled to immediately suspend the Eir Sport 1 feed due to Virgin Media’s fundamental contract breaches, we are deeply aware of the importance of live sport to viewers, in particular at these difficult times. We therefore gave Virgin Media seven days’ notice, in the hope that they would make reasonable efforts to engage and prevent customers being deprived of live sport, including the PRO14 games last weekend."

"Eir Sport can only pay for sports events that actually take place and we have consistently offered fair terms to Virgin Media," the spokesperson said. "Renegotiation on rights fees have been commonplace over the past few months globally as broadcasters and content owners come to fair and reasonable resolutions around the absence of live sport and the curtailed seasons now in place. However Virgin Media has refused to engage on a constructive solution."

In a statement to Independent.ie, Virgin Media said:

"Virgin Media are very disappointed with eir’s decision. The sporting schedule continues across Virgin Media channels including the Heineken Champions Cup, The Six Nations, the UEFA Nations League as well as the return of next seasons Champions League and Europa League coverage."

Yes the disagreement between eir and Virgin has left us with little/no options of watching live rugby 🙁

As virgin media customers, can anyone recommend how to go about getting BT and/or eir sport channels?

Is our best/only option to switch to eir now? Or do virgin offer other premium TV packages with BT/eir included?

29 bucks a month for a year for eir bb at home seems like the solution. You can add both eir channels to your sky box if you have one or watch on phone/pc/tablet/whatever hooked up to your telly. Unless you are still in contract with virgin.

In a year's time who knows what media landscape will exist. But I'm sure there will be options.

They also give you amazon prime tv which may be of interest and even a land line for us old people who still use such things. All in the deal

6 months of no Pro14 and they pull this no notice within a week of restarting.

I think its time the law was changed to give better protections to customers.

Has anyone found a good working system for watching Pro14?

I have Virgin Media so finding it pretty impossible to watch games. So many people are moving to dodgy boxes because there is literally no other way. I signed up for Now TV (Premier Sports), but even that doesn't work because it is Geolocked for Ireland.

Premier has always been Geoblocked in Ireland for Pro 14.

Best option is to count the nanoseconds to the end of your broadband contract with virgin and move to eir. I swore I would never use eir(com) again back in 2006 and was a UPC/Virgin broadband customer ever since. But I moved to them again during the summer as Virgin was quite congested in our area and also.... Broadband, phone, Eir sports And Amazon prime for under 30 bucks a month.

You can even add both eir sports to channels to your sky box (if you have one) as part of the deal. Bye bye Virgin.
