Yet to see any actual scientists come out against the approach the UK Government is taking, just the social media mob. Spread of infection is at a different stage over here than it is in Ireland. Actions like Irelands will come in later. All decisions made so far are under recommendation of CMO and Scientists.

Not sure much action has been decided from yesterdays COBRA. They've changed their response in name only - I can't see any action on their part.

Just watching an extraordinary debate on Channel 4 between a UK Prof John Edmuns and a US based medical specialist where the UK Prof. Is making the case for the "herd immunity" theory which he concedes may result in 200.000 deaths of the 'vulnerable' population in the next 3-6 months but will result in the 'herd' becoming immune to the effects of Covid 19 within 6 months. And then British society can get on with the rest of its lives.

The US guy (and me) were going bananas at the concept that the medical world or public health medicine were conceding the loss of 200,000 people for an experiment is mind boggling. But that's the world of Boris and Cummings.

Ruckedtobits wrote:What is the public health prognosis on proportions of the population that will require hospitalisation? I've read highly varying figures and all very confusing.

Is there an estimated % of total population who will need hospital?
Is there an estimated % of those infected who will need hospital?
Is there an estimated % of those over 60 & infected, who will need hospital?

Finally, given that those who get sick from the virus will be identified and admitted to hospital, can we use this figure to work back to what number of people are likely to have been infected and thus get an estimate of the % of the total population that have been infected.

Questions, questions, questions.
The answers to your questions would require the expertise of a professional statistical analysis expert.
Is a Viralogist such an animal.
Guys like that are not ten a penny but they do exist.
The government would certainly have access to one.
The more pertinent question might be -
What are they not telling us?
The fact that they have moved from a general location like "the East of the country" to no location is so as to as to give as little info as possible.
A 2m figure was mentioned a while ago.
They weren't disputed however we were advised that the HSE were working on their own figures and hoped to advise us anon.
Anon has come and gone and no figures in sight yet.
All of which is worrying.
My gut feeling tells me we have two big problem clusters.
Cork being at the top of the list.
What I don't understand is why the clampdown on information is happening.

That sounds like the right length of time.
The only problem with any lockdown is that every country has to be acting in sync
Otherwise once they reopen their borders the CV will reenter

So, no sport of any kind for a month at least eh?
It's like the start of Summer when the rugby and football end. However there's no gah either.

What happened the hippocratic oath?
That said, is it a bluff to get the vulnerable to protect themselves and do so with vigilance? Which could work in theory and force the people to be more accountable for the risk. It's stupidly irresponsible, but could be effective.

I avoid most forms of Social Media but there's a headline deep in page 6 of today's Irish Times which should be tweeted and re-tweeted throughout the country.

CHINA HAS JUST EIGHT NEW CASES

Journalist Peter Goff writes from Beijing that for the first time since January, Chinese Health officials reported new Covid 19 cases in single figures. One day in February, the same officials reported almost 15,000 new cases.

Given that this country has reported over 80,000 cases since January, this is exceedingly good news and, hopefully, gives the lie to the unproven theory that supressing movement of people would lead to a dramatic upswing and second-wave of infection.

Keep at it China, you may yet lead us out of this fearful time.

So this morning at 10am, the authorities here announced 71 new cases of Covid-19 in South Korea. On February 28th, there were 833 reported for the previous day. This marks the lowest daily number of new cases since February 19. We've seen a steady decline all week and that was despite a new cluster of cases found in Seoul.

On March 9, the ratio of full recoveries to deaths was 2:1. Internationally people were freaking out. But the quality of health care in Korea is so good that they didn't need to release patients too early. There isn't a shortage of beds. Today the ratio of full recoveries to deaths is 11:1.

Over 260,000 people have been tested. That is an extraordinary number. Unfortunately there have been 75 deaths. We closed the schools and canceled sport but there is no lockdown. Restaurants and bars are still open but the govt asked people to stay inside. They listened. And now we have drops in confirmed cases at a considerable rate. The speed and efficiency of testing has been breathtaking. There are more drive through testing centres than McDonald's drive thru. Korea can be a f%~ked up place sometimes but their combating of Covid should be an inspiration to every country. The battle is not won yet. People are still dying and people are sick. Despite the insane travel restrictions placed upon Koreans, there is nowhere in the world I'd rather be.

@Suisse.
I trust you have avoided the CV so far.
The hunch is that Cork has proportionately, significantly, more cases than the rest of the country.
(Reported yesterday 21 cases in the East, 13 in the South indicates this)
If that were the case (or another location) should Cork be isolated from the rest of the country.
Is that the type of thing that happened in South Korea.
Or even certain districts in a large city.
Also is there any information about what is happening in North Korea.

There’s no way the it’s not running rife in Dublin, apparently the Gardai had to close multiple locals last night. Apparently social distancing measures is for everyone else
