Leinster Schools Cup, Ross O'Carroll-Kelly and "The Gick".
I never played in the Cup. I never even made it onto the SCT. Best I ever managed in school was to be captain of the 3rds (and even THAT was 20 years ago!). So I never got to feel the adulation (or be the romantic target of any of the girls in Alex etc.) in the way that RO'C-K did. Nevertheless, when I read The Mis-education Years (finished it today) it brought back memories of the excitement of going to the Cup games as a spectator for 6 years, including one (unfortunately unsuccessful) foray to Lansdowne in late March (the final wasn't on Paddy's that year, due to an international on the 19th).
A couple of things baffled me, though, and maybe there's users on here who are more familiar with the whole scene who can enlighten me:
1. Why does Ross call Terenure "The Gick"?
1a. Is this nickname an invention of Paul Howard's, or is it an established nickname? I'm sure I never heard it back in the day.
1b. Where does the name come from?
2. Ross, of course, being the total ledge that he is, has great success with the ladies of various differnet schools which also have nicknames. But to what extent are these real nicknames for real schools, or are they amalgamations like Castlerock? Some of them I sorta recognise, but not all.
2a. Mounties: Sort of obvious, but is it Anville or Sackville or both?
2b. Alex: Well, that's definately obvious.
2c. Whores on the Shore?
2d. The Virgin Megastore?
2e. Pill Hill?
It's not the end of the world if I don't find out, but it would be nice!!
Thanks.

2c. Whores on the Shore? Sandymount high?
2d. The Virgin Megastore?
2e. Pill Hill? Sion hill ( I think)

Ah, yes, but don't forget that Sackville's only just down the road from one half of Castlerock!
Thanks for your other answers.

Whores on the Shore - Loreto Dalkey or Holy Child Killiney ... whichever suits at the time!
Mounties only ever applied to Mount Anville
Pill Hill - yes, Sion Hill ... amusing since they seem to do the opposite and never us the pill.
Virgin Megastore - Loreto on the Green - another contradiction! haha!
Terenure was always called the Gick.. even when I was in school (even back in the early 80s when I was in junior school it was the Gick) - no idea why either!

Isn't it something to do with the cess pool behind the main pitch in Lakelands?Leinsterman wrote: Terenure was always called the Gick.. even when I was in school (even back in the early 80s when I was in junior school it was the Gick) - no idea why either!

Mounties - can be both Anville or Sackville - just depends on where you live. The Current Mrs Mauler being a Mountie - The Sackville variety.

Another school nickname that most definitely did not fit the bill was Mount Anything.

Used the Terenure pitch be a pig farm?
I know it was raised earlier, but could the Mods arrange something whereby Terenure automaticaly becomes The Gick? Go on...
Also, SNBW, really hoped you read the original Mis-Education. Much better book!

A little known fact about JC (not Jerry, the other one. The nice Jewish boy) was that he was a top-level statistician. Where does the bible tell us this? Mark 6:30-44
His Poisson distribution skills were miraculous.

I read The MisEducation Years, but I didn't realise there was a difference (other than the cover, obv!) between that and The MisEducation of RO'C-K.

The first book originally came out it was called diary of a schools rugby player - it went out of print and returned heavily re-edited and not nearly as good under the title the miseducation years

Bottle of Satzenbrau or Ritz, or a malibu & pineaple (if they were high-falutin' types) usually did the job....
