Doesn't sound great

Leinster medical staff initially hoped that keyhole surgery would be sufficient but a more invasive operation was required in Manchester.
O’Brien’s wound got infected soon after, leading to a loss of around 10 kilos – or almost a stone – in weight.
This was in part down to his convalescence and in part down to the infection.

Re: Sean O Brien
He won't be back until next season, not exactly news.
Re: Sean O Brien
"10 kilos almost a stone" Jaysus lads.Get the basics right. That is closer to 2 stone than one.
A stone is slightly more than 6kg.

Re: Sean O Brien
And by the way. B0llix. I was hoping to see him in May.
Re: Sean O Brien
Yeah saw that. Looks like his rehab will only just begin when the shoulder is right. 10kg is an absolutely monumental amount of weight to lose by a professional athlete. (for reference, it's almost the difference in weight from Jamie Heaslip to Zane Kirchner, an 8 to a winger...)
So I'd imagine it would take the entire summer to put that kind of weight back on (in the right way).
I had a sneaking suspicion that we'd see him back for Toulon, but you can forget about that now. If it wasn't the case before, I'd say it's definitely the case now that he wont play again this season.
Step in Jordi Murphy. Big opportunity.

Re: Sean O Brien
Really tough. I also had a back of the brain hope that the miracle workers would have him patched up ahead of schedule and he would be ready for the HC but the infection has killed off any hope of that. That is a lot of weight to lose. He would not be carrying much body fat so replacing it will be tough.
On a positive note if it is all fixed properly we will have a fit and healthy SOB ready for next season with a few less miles on the clock Better to have this problem now rather than on the run in to a WC.

Re: Sean O Brien
As soon as I heard he would have proper surgery I thought that was it, he was out for the season, so I'm not too surprised. The main thing is we'll see him play for us next season, which is something I always love reminding myself of.

Re: Sean O Brien
In general I nearly prefer guys to take measured recovery than risk rushing themselves back for one or two games, angle for summer tours etc.
Hopefully he gets a big pre season and we have him for first rounds of the BT Pro 12 on SKy Sports

10 kg is a positively enormous amount of weight. Most of that's muscle too. Hope he's ok!
