Leinster v Wasps

Post by Oldschool »

The most notablleb trend this sesson has been Leinster's very poor first half performances.
Expect Wasps to tear into us right from the start.
One of the reasons for our poor start has to be down to spreading the ball wide before earning the right to do so. It also makes us predictable and teams have been getting to Gopperth as a result.
Boss is now a busted flush. This was evident last season and he hasn't improved.
Luke McGrath should have been getting the game time Boss wss given but even so he's more of a threat and the big occasion doesn't seem to bother him.
We've had the rucks inspections, its time our forwards showed us what they've learned.
Ball carrying is an issue for the forwards but surely it's not too much to ask for a few pick and goes.
Finally - Kicking out of hand needs a total makeover both offensively and defensively.
BT have the ulster game and Sky have the Munster game.

McGrath hasn't convinced when he's got the chance. Not much tbf but he's had chances all the same. All he had to do with them was not make any glaring errors and he failed for the most part. Boss is on his way down and as you say has been poor. It isn't too much to ask that McGrath be slightly better in his cameos. I.E Don't f*ck up!
Ruddock's tackle stats consistently too low for me to be taken seriously as a Six Nations blindside..... Ruddock's defensive stats don't stack up. - All Blacks Nil, Jan 15th, 2014

Agree with your post in general but 'dross' is way out of order. I accept its Saturday night after a few beers and another poor showing but this is personal sh1t and we should be beyond this kind of stuff. Iasaac Boss has given a lot to Leinster since he came south and should get the recognition for that, his form has dropped, it happens. He's still one of ours. Yellow card for Oldschool but I suspect that you're the kind of man who'll accept that come Sunday morning.

1. McGrath, 2. Cronin, 3. Ross, 4. Toner, 5. Douglas, 6. Ruddock, 7. Ryan, 8. Heaslip (C), 9. Reddan, 10. Madigan, 11. Fanning, 12. Reid, 13. D'Arcy, 14. ZK, 15. Rob, 16. Strauss, 17. Bent, 18. Furlong, 19. Mike Mac, 20. Jenno (VDF if Jenno isn't fit), 21. McGrath, 22. Gopperth, 23. Macken.

Other viable midfield combo would be 12. D'Arcy and 13. Macken but I feel Reid is the more creative player to have on the pitch. I like Conan but I think we need cover at 7 even if Jenno isn't fit.
The sport that unites Catholic, Protestant and dissenter has had its day of days. Pity anybody who can't enjoy it. Some day.

VDF is not in the European Squad. So it's Conan if Jennings isn't fit. 7 back rows in the Euro squad.

Conan, Heaslip, Jennings, McLaughlin, Murphy, Ruddock, Ryan

Is teo in the squad, dont think it would be awful to throw him onto the bench. More likely to change something then macken or mcgrath coming on

He'd still be a better bet than Ryan.

Yes. And for 8 places outside scrum half (in the 23) we have 9 players + Teo. So he is not far off having to play.

Fit players:

OutHalf: Gopperth, Madigan
Centre: D'Arcy, Macken, Reid Teo
Back 3: Fanning, Kearney R, Kirchner, M McGrath

Logic possibly dictates 2 of Fanning, McGrath, Macken, Reid, Teo, to miss out.

You need a minimum of 1 out of the wingers (Faning & McGrath) and 2 out of the other 3.

OR

Both Fanning McGrath and 1 out of the other 3.

Be interesting to see what he does in contact. Have 10 years of League dulled his rucking and ball presentation skills

If we're lucky we can play;

RK
ZK
Darce
Reid
Fanning
Gopps
Reddan
Heaslip
Jennings
Rhys
Maccer
Toner
Ross
Cronin
McGrath

Strauss
Bent
Furlong
Douglas
Ryan
Boss
Madigan
McGrath

Tempted to start mick McGrath, think it's a game he could shine in. I wouldn't usually advocate a start for him, but this game is made from him.

Wasps looking quite impressive at home to Bath. 12-0 at half-time. Probably should have scored a try by now, given the pressure they've had. They've dominated the scrums.

and Strauss can play 7 too

dont think Mike has the mobility for backrow anymore, especially in an open game which I think it might be, even if it was for only the last ten minutes or so
it/he will probably have to do but its imperfect

Fair point about Boss. Although I still think the our TMO should be having a look at him.
