Most Decorated Irish Player Ever

Post by blockhead »

Rob Kearney has, I think, 4 Six Nations, 3 Heinos, 3 Pro14s and a Challenge cup to his name.
Has anyone go more than that?
You know I'm going to lose,
And gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live FOREVER!

Some haul, let's hope there's a bit more in this season alone for him.

Did Healy play any part in the 2009 Slam of BOD?
Just checked, made his debut that November. Ditto SOB.
Best spans the 4 6N titles, anyone else?

No, just those two.

Kearney is much more decorated as an Ireland player than a Leinster player really. He played a full part in nearly every game in 2009, 2014, 2015, and again now, the 2018 six nations.

We forget that particular individuals might have been missing during particular tournaments in their era. I remember an interview with Rob Kearney in the run up to the Clermont game in 2012, and he said that from his own perspective, he didn't really feel like he has a full HEC medal. In 2009, he was injured (or ill) from after the Quinns match, so he missed the Munster game and then the final in Murrayfield. In 2011, he didn't play a single knock out match.

He was extraordinary in 2012, and a very deserved European player of the year. I think that a big part of what drove him that year was the feeling that his team mates had something that he didn't have. His performance away against Clermont was exceptional, and we wouldn't have won it without him (not just because of the ludicrous the drop goal).

Now obviously he certainly deserves the 2009 and 2011 medals, as he played in every match up to and including the quarter final in 09 and played in at least one group game in 2011 (Saracens?). But I know that the 2012 one is the one he'll feel he truly owns. His Ireland career is a bit different. He absolutely owns every one of the 4 6N medals.

Rob was subbed on in the 2009 final.

Oh yeah! I forgot that. The general point is still true though.

Kinda odd that the top 2, assuming Heaslip is second, are reviled in many quarters

Fair play to Quinlan, always rated him as a player.
It's fair to say that his analysis, in the last year or so, has become much better and more rounded too.
He's learning his new trade and getting better at it.

Are there many of the current squad that have a medal from 14 or 15, but not both? Henshaw was around in 15 but not 14 as I recall.

Another winners medal for Sir Rob. (although he nearly fupped up this one)

Updated to 4 Six Nations, 4 Heinos, 5 Pro14s and a Challenge cup to his name
14 winners medals in the space of 12 seasons!
Lost out in 5 finals too in that period, and probably a few last day 6N disappointment's.
What a career!

It sure isn't!
1 more year with Leinster and we're not paying.
I'd imagine he'll be off after that.
