The game will take place in Energia Park at 3pm.

The initial fixture was due to be played on Sunday, 10 February but was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances.

The other three games in the Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup will be played this week.

Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup Second Round (All games 3pm in Energia Park)
Tuesday, 12 February – Gonzaga College v Terenure College
Wednesday, 13 February – Belvedere College v Newbridge College
Thursday, 14 February – Clongowes Wood College v CBC Monkstown
Monday, 25 February – Blackrock College v St Michael’s College
It was postponed due to an outbreak of mumps which is very unfortunate for all concerned - on health grounds mainly and from the point of view of the competition a distant second.

It knocks the scheduling and match preparations for both teams out of kilter, as well as whomever the winner plays in the semi-final.It may even see one team having to play 3 big matches in a shortened time frame and be disadvantaged relative to other teams that will be fresh. I think it is a manageable issue if they change the date of the final.

However, it seems this outbreak has gone beyond one school and is into Trinity and Maynooth among others. What happens if some of the other schools have outbreaks? Nobody wants to see a walkover.

What happens if Michael's have an outbreak close to the 25th Feb? Is there another 2 week deferral or do schools have to field those deemed to be healthy and let the fixture play out?

Disrupting sporting competitions is the least of the issues arising from what can only have have been caused by those parents who decided that the MMR is not for their children. It is a serious public health issue for the vulnerable and reckless parents should reflect on their actions.

The biggest disadvantage is if any / many of the rock team contracted Mumps. Even after a 2 week delay they'll be in poor physical shape.

As regards playing 3 big matches in a shorten time frame, I dont think thats a particular issue. In 2016 the Rock / Belvo QF was played on the 22nd Feb followed by the SF on 3 March and the Final on the 13th Mar. So assuming there is no further medical issues or there isn't a draw it, they can fit in this years QF & Final by the 17th Mar. Its the same time frame as 2016.

Great work getting the 4/5/6th year breakdowns. Makes a difference at this level. Gonzaga have 4 x 5th years and 2x 4th years on the bench. only 1 6th year forwards. I think they will edge this match, but it will be tight.

Terenure have been unlucky with the draw in the last 5 years coming up against either Rock or Michaels in the 1st or 2nd round. There was definitely an opportunity for them to progress in this years competition.
Another strong Gonzaga team for the 3rd year in a row.
It really looks like there is a big 4 of Belvedere, Blackrock, Clongowes and Michaels. The next in the pecking order is Roscrea. Marys, Terenure and Gonzaga neck and neck after that.

Terenure & Marys should joining the league.

Gonzaga into their 2nd semi finals in a row.

Only seen the 1st half so far but was impressed by Gonzaga's 2, 8, 9 and 13. Both their 2nd rows were very good too.

They went out 1st round last year to Belvedere in a close fought game 11 -10. They got to SF in 2017.

Looked very well drilled team and beat Terenure at the breakdown with very quick and aggressive rucking and no shortage of good poaches. Also high quality passing. I thought the 8 was the stand out player on the pitch.
I think Terenure will look back on that with regret. They had a much more physical pack but didn't use it, or when they did they didn't protect the ball at ruck. The 6 & 13 looked v good.
As in previous years when Gonzaga come up against the likes of Rock they may struggle physically up front. But if they get close to parity they can do damage.

Gonzaga 2016 team lost in the QFs against holders and eventual finalists Roscrea.

New coach since 2017, Declan Fassbender has taken things to a new level there. Original jump in rugby standards and structures came through Bobby Byrne a teacher, former Terenure & Blackrock club Captain and then Leinster/Irish schools coach and UCD coach/DoR .

Zaga have produced more pro players than any of Mary's, Belvedere and Nure in the last 10 years.

They are definitely a top 8 team now.

Roscrea will do well to stay in that group given their ongoing struggle with numbers. They were very game this year, but overpowered by Belvo.

He was very unlucky last year to break his collar bone in the same game last year. Whether hes at 8 or 5, hes certainly a big talent. His brother Ivan is the prop for Clontarf AIL team.

Interesting to see Newbridge winger Conroy score an almost identical intercept try 2 years in a row against the same opposition.

Soroka, Grogan and Coleman are three potential academy players in that team.

Like what i've seen from Leonard too but will need to play a different position.

Shame Mulvainey missed yesterday with injury.

watched 1st 30 mins of Clongowes/CBC

impressed by McMahon at TH for Clongowes, Gilheaney at 7 was good too.

While Power, Reynolds and Quinn are standout players. Quinn is a 4th year, so certainly a player to watch.

Looks like they are still aiming for a 17 March Final. If that's the case, and if either Michael's or Rock get to the final it will be tough to have had just 1 match in 4 weeks and then play 3 in 3 weeks. Sure they are young enough to bounce back in terms of energy levels, but if there are any injuries of note then it is hard to plug the gap in that timeframe. Injuries will affect Michael's more being half the size as a school and already fielding just 6 x 6th years...I would say that of course...but thems the facts.
